Why does Bryce Harper have a Cameo? Seriously
Bryce Harper’s in the middle of a strong 2026 campaign. The last thing he, or any of his teammates in Philadelphia need, is a distraction. Yet, here we are.
Harper’s been in the news the last few days because of a Cameo message he recorded in 2024. The message was for Terry Thompson, a FanDuel VIP who was suffering through steep losses at the time. “Hey Terry, what’s up brother?” Harper begins the video. “Your host Bryttanni from FanDuel wanted to make sure your Thanksgiving was extra special.”
The video was purchased by a FanDuel employee, and then submitted to Thompson for being a part of FanDuel’s VIP bettor program. Thompson has reportedly placed $18.5 Million worth of bets on FanDuel. He’s since claimed that he has a gambling addiction (No kidding).
Sportsbooks don’t care about addiction. They care about making money. That angle’s known. It’s been discussed. I’ll let others fight that fight.
What I’m more interested in is Bryce Harper’s role in this ordeal. According to a report from Front Office Sports, Harper didn’t know the video was going to be used for FanDuel’s VIP bettor program. I have no hard time believing that.
The problem is he should have known the video was going to be used for something. Hell, he acknowledges the message is from a FanDuel employee, in the video!
The bigger question for Harper is, Why do you even have a Cameo?
Harper is currently playing on a contract worth $330 Million. Having a Cameo account to wish rich people Happy Thanksgiving at $900 a pop, just isn’t worth the risk to his day job. Right now this story is a distraction. How much of a distraction has yet to be seen. But even if that distraction costs the team just one at-bat, is $900 worth it?
Bryce, delete your Cameo and focus on this game called baseball. You’re pretty good at it.
