What’s the Holdup with Travis Hunter’s Contract?
Travis Hunter is trying to make history as the league’s greatest two-way player. Not just good on both sides — great.
Of course, he’s not the first to do it. At his peak, the Texans lined up JJ Watt at tight end for a few plays. Early in his career, Julian Edelman was basically a utility knife: punt returner, DB, WR — whatever Belichick needed.
But let’s be honest — comparing Edelman to Hunter coming out of college is laughable.
The Jaguars traded up to draft Hunter at No. 2 overall. They called him a “game-changer.” Jaguars GM James Gladstone said, “Travis Hunter embodies belief. He’s a rare person, he’s a rare player… a reminder that the boundaries of football were built to be challenged.”
Okay. So why hasn’t he signed his rookie deal?
Hunter hasn’t skipped workouts. He hasn’t threatened to hold out. But he's one of the only first-rounders who still hasn’t put pen to paper.
There’s a rookie contract ceiling — about $46 million. That part’s set in stone. So what’s the delay? When the guarantees trigger? How much he gets today vs. next year?
You traded picks to get him. You called him a unicorn. You said he might change the sport.
So…pay the man.
Unless, of course, you were just buttering him up for the cameras.
