Was Tom Brady the Mystery Man that Helped the Seahawks Win the Super Bowl?
While appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, Seahawks Head Coach Mike Macdonald was asked about the advice he’d gotten before the Super Bowl.
“John Harbaugh and I talked,” Macdonald said. “He was great. Probably can’t mention one guy that really helped us out that had some conflict of interest.”
Macdonald quickly shut down the idea that it was Bill Belichick. Belichick wanting to help the Seahawks might have made sense. Belichick’s been at odds with Robert Kraft since ESPN reported the Patriots’ Owner told other teams not to hire him.
Many have speculated that Tom Brady actually makes the most sense to have helped Macdonald. It’s not that Brady has any bad blood with the Patriots. More so that Klint Kubiac, who was serving as Seattle’s Offensive Coordinator at the time, was about to be hired as the Raiders’ Head Coach. Kubiac coming to Vegas with a ring, elevates his credibility with his new players.
That said, it is strange for a minority owner of another team to give helpful advice against his former club. And that’s before we factor in Brady’s role as an employee of Fox Sports. Members of the media need to either remain unbiased, or disclose their conflict of interests.
Obviously we know that Brady played for the Patriots, and now has an ownership stake in the Raiders. When he comments on those teams, we know exactly why he might have some favoritism. If Brady has a loyalty to Macdonald or the Seahawks, Fox viewers deserve to know about it.
If Brady is Macdonald’s secret advice giver, conflict of interest is nothing new to him. Brady’s already criticized for serving as a color commentator while having a direct tie to one of the 32 teams. He and Troy Aikman have that in common.
