Tony Romo was offered NFL Head Coaching Position!
Remember when Jeff Saturday became the Colts Head Coach, despite not having college or pro coaching experience? Apparently Tony Romo was made a similar offer.
While appearing on Pardon My Take, Tony Romo was discussing his opportunities to continue playing after the 2016 season. “There were some times that first year (of retirement)…I did get some calls.” Romo said. “You start to move on. And then with the body and everything...and then on top of it…it was like..it still wasn’t Dallas, and for me it’s like the Cowboys were home.”
“What’s one team that called you?” PFT Commenter went on to ask. “Just give us one team.”
“I’m not gonna go there.” Romo smirked. “There were like three teams that called (after the season started).”
It’s no surprise that Romo got calls to return to the NFL in 2017. That season was infamously bad for starting quarterbacks. Carson Wentz, Deshaun Watson, Andrew Luck, Sam Bradford, and Ryan Tannehill all suffered season ending injuries that season (Or had pre-existing injuries that wound up costing them the season).
The surprise, that maybe shouldn’t be a surprise anymore, came a few moments later in the interview.
“I’ve been offered like Head Coaching jobs in the NFL from owners.” Romo said. “And that’s always flattering because they know you know the game at a high level.”
Romo went on to imply he wasn’t interested. He shut down PFT Commenter and Big Cat’s guesses that the offers were from the Browns and the Cowboys. He didn’t want to go further down the road from there.
I will, though.
The Chiefs and the Rams are the only teams that have the same Head Coach today as the first year of Romo’s retirement. So assuming Reid and McVay have always been safe, which is a fair assumption, that would bring us down to 28 Owners that could have called Romo. If Romo’s wording was precise, we can eliminate the Packers too, since they technically don’t have an owner.
Without Romo giving us a year, it’s hard to dwindle the list down much further than that (He gave us 2017 for Quarterback opportunities, but didn’t specify a year, or years, for Head Coaching).
If you can think of a way to rule out a few other clubs, I’m all ears!
