Kyler Murray, Kirk Cousins, and…Oh Yeah, a Super Bowl Champion: Russell Wilson Still Exists
Let me catch you up on the quarterback market so far this NFL offseason.
It’s been awesome.
Malik Willis signed with the Dolphins.
Tua Tagovailoa signed with the Falcons.
Geno Smith and Carson Wentz are both with the Jets.
Daniel Jones signed a two-year contract to stay with the Colts.
And with the league year beginning today, three more high-profile quarterbacks are officially available:
Kyler Murray — heavily linked to the Minnesota Vikings.
Kirk Cousins — connected to the Vikings, Cardinals, Raiders, and Steelers.
And Russell Wilson — who everybody seems to have forgotten even exists.
Which is kind of funny considering Wilson is the only one of the three who has actually reached a Super Bowl.
Two, actually.
He even won one.
While researching this post I did manage to find exactly one article discussing a possible landing spot for Wilson: the Kansas City Chiefs.
At first glance the idea of Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes — two quarterbacks who were once both considered Top 5 players at the position — sharing a roster seems a little ridiculous.
But it might actually make sense.
Wilson is still as competitive as ever. During an appearance on Bussin’ With The Boys during Super Bowl week, he talked about his love for the game, his desire to keep competing, and his goal of winning another Lombardi Trophy.
Actually, three more.
But even the eternally optimistic Wilson has to acknowledge the reality of his situation.
Last season he went 0-3 with the Giants before being benched for rookie Jaxson Dart.
And in 2024 he didn’t impress the Steelers enough to even warrant a contract offer.
At this point, the best path for Wilson to start Week 1 is landing with a team that needs a bridge quarterback.
Most of those jobs are already taken. The Jets filled theirs. The Falcons filled theirs. And the Cardinals are expected to resolve their situation soon.
Which leaves one interesting possibility.
The Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in December. Most ACL recoveries take around 12 months. Kansas City is clearly planning to make another Super Bowl run after signing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker and re-signing Taylor Swift’s fiancé.
Russell Wilson could be the perfect short-term solution to hold down the fort until Mahomes is fully healthy.
And even if Mahomes returns sooner than expected, having a former Super Bowl champion as your backup quarterback certainly doesn’t hurt.
Not to mention…
Having Taylor Swift and Ciara as WAGs on the same team might give us the greatest pop collaboration of all time.
