Brian Daboll is already fired. He just doesn’t know it yet.
Daboll is sticking with Russell Wilson, despite the obvious choice.
New York Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll confirmed that Russell Wilson will be the starting quarterback in Week 2. This is in contrast to his comments after Sunday’s loss to the Commanders when Daboll was noncommittal to that very question. “We're going to get home and look at our game.” Daboll said after the 21-6 loss. Apparently Daboll looked at the tape and made his decision by Monday’s press conference where he said “After a game — it’s an emotional game, it was a tough game, we didn’t play particularly well, I would say, collectively…that game doesn't fall on Russell Wilson. We got to do a better job collectively; coaching, playing. But Russ will be the starter.”
In other words, Brian Daboll did lose faith in Russell Wilson during the game. He had to go back and watch tape before making the determination that Wilson will continue to be the starter, at least one more week. The problem is that anybody with a pair of eyes and any level of historical football knowledge can see what’s happening to the Giants.
Jaxson Dart won the team over in the preseason. He looked sharper than Russell Wilson. He looked faster than Russell Wilson. He made better decisions than Russell Wilson. He pulled the trigger and fired more accurately than Russell Wilson. AND, the team likes him more than Russell Wilson.
Reality check: Rookie Jaxson Dart is a better quarterback than 14-year-vet, Russell Wilson. Everybody knows it. Hell, the Giants front office knows it! That’s why they’re violating NFL media availability rules and not allowing Jaxson Dart to talk to the press. They’re scared of the fans falling in love with Jaxson Dart too. They don’t want all of that noise influencing a very obvious decision.
Well, obvious to those of us who aren’t afraid to take chances. Brian Daboll and Russell Wilson suffer the same curse. They’re both overly cautious. Wilson isn’t about to throw four interceptions. Instead he’ll take sacks and try to game manage his team to a victory – something that doesn’t work consistently in the modern NFL. Daboll isn’t about to sit a 10-time Pro Bowl, Super Bowl Champion for a Rookie after just one game. Here’s the problem – Daboll needs to make a splash. He needs to go against the grain and take a shot, otherwise he’s definitely going to be fired by Week 10.
There’s no reason to stick with a guy who was hired for his exceptional work with Josh Allen, but as a Head Coach hasn’t had a quarterback throw more than 15 touchdowns in a season yet. There’s no reason to stick with a head coach who won’t put the best man for the job in, just because he doesn’t have the experience of the lesser quarterback.
The Giants screwed this up by not trading Russell Wilson a little over a week ago when his value might have been as high as a 4th Round Pick. Particularly to the Saints who might have been happy to take a veteran like Russell Wilson in a quarterback room that lacks experience and poise. Wilson would have been a better fit in New Orleans, instead of remaining on a Giants team that already misses Tommy DeVito in their locker room.
