Aikman, Brady and the NFL Have a Massive Conflict of Interest Problem—and It’s Getting Worse
Aikman said the quiet part out loud and now it's Brady's problem too.
I don’t blame Troy Aikman and Tom Brady, I blame the NFL for allowing this DISGRACE to continue.
During an interview, Aikman talked about his new role with the Miami Dolphins.
While he doesn’t have an official title, he’ll serve as a consultant of some sort for the foreseeable future.
One problem though—
HE STILL WORKS FOR ESPN.
Just as he has for years, Aikman will continue serving alongside Joe Buck, broadcasting nationally televised games in 2026.
Which means nothing changes.
He’ll still meet with teams ahead of games.
He’ll still be around practices.
He’ll still talk to players and coaches.
Just like every other member of the media.
Except now—he has a vested interest in one of the thirty-two teams.
And Aikman, unwittingly, acknowledged exactly why that matters. “I think the Dolphins were wise in understanding my relationships around the league,” Aikman said. “And knowing that I have information that they don’t have or can’t get. And I think they were smart in taking advantage of that.”
Aikman went on to define a conflict of interest, without realizing he was defining a conflict of interest.
“I don’t feel there’s a conflict. But I will say I’m pulling for the Dolphins, because now I have something at stake.” Aikman said.
Yeah, we call that conflict of interest.
Brady is in a similar situation with the Las Vegas Raiders while serving as FOX’s top analyst.
When Brady bought into the Raiders, the NFL stepped in with restrictions—
Limiting how he could interact with teams.
Those restrictions have since been loosened, with one caveat: his interviews must be done remotely.
Aikman will likely receive similar limitations.
But that doesn’t fix anything.
Other employees of FOX Sports and ESPN don’t have those limitations. There’s nothing to stop an employee of ESPN or FOX from sharing something they learn at a team facility – intentional or not.
As long as ESPN is employing a consultant for the Dolphins…
As long as FOX is employing a minority owner of the Raiders…
Every other team should avoid those networks like the plague.
And this isn’t a shot at Aikman or Brady’s integrity.
It’s a reality check.
If you’re tied to an NFL team, you have a responsibility to help that team succeed. You can’t be receiving a check from an organization where everyone else is all-in, while sitting on information that could be a competitive advantage.
The NFL needs to step in and force Brady and Aikman into decisions.
You can work for a sports network.
Or you can work for an NFL team.
You don’t get to do both.
Because this is a clear conflict of interest. The league pretending it’s anything else is the real problem.
